Teacher evaluations are going on across the country at this time of year. You've likely recently done one yourself. It is my wish that this was a practice that we could incorporate into more of the relationships we have. I think it would be great if at the end of the season you could get evaluations from those close to you. How good of a friend have I been this season? And son or daughter? How good of a sibling have I been? How would you evaluate my performance as a lover? Do you have any comments on my behavior as your roommate? And on the other side of the coin, I think far too often we let those we love go feeling unappreciated. The problems we have, the things that bother us, we let them fester and grow until we develop an irrational disposition against those who should be our loved ones. Ideally, we shouldn't need passive aggressive pieces of paper to evaluate such things, ideally we should be able to properly communicate our love and our boundaries in a healthy way, making others feel appreciated while still facilitating their growth as individuals as well as members of a community. Ideally. But we all know that day will never come. So evaluations would be cool.
